More and more music is released as multichannel that captures where the instruments and vocals sit. Apple Music and other major services offer tracks in the Dolby Atmos format.

Music, though, is where first impressions go wrong most easily, for two reasons: a difference in loudness standards, and the ear's adaptation. This page tackles both first.

Most of your memories of great sound were made in a cinema or a concert hall. Play the same track at home and that sound isn't there. The content hasn't changed — the playback path has.

01Loudness

Why it sounds quieter
and flatter at first

It is not a flaw in the track — it is a difference in loudness standards.

By spec, Atmos tracks are delivered about 8–10 dB quieter than stereo masters. Compare without matching levels and the louder one seems better — a known illusion.

The louder-sounds-better illusion

Play the same song a little louder and it sounds punchier and clearer. It is a long-established effect in audio. So if you compare two tracks at different levels as-is, the louder one wins regardless of content.

Stereo masters carry a history of the loudness war. Atmos tracks, by contrast, have a lower loudness ceiling by design, to leave headroom for directional information. Apple Music's delivery spec is −18 LKFS or lower — about 8–10 dB below recent pop stereo masters.

Turn Atmos on without knowing this gap and you get a “quiet and flat” first impression. Matching the volume before you compare is the only fair comparison.

Check that it is actually on

Dolby Atmos may be off, or set to “Automatic,” in your service settings. In Apple Music you can choose Dolby Atmos under the Music section of Settings. Labels vary by device and service.

This is not an unfamiliar step Apple Music's lossless audio doesn't play on subscription alone either — you have to switch it on in settings. High-quality features usually take a step like this, and Atmos is no different.
02Adaptation

The oddness isn't taste —
it's a matter of learning.

Oddness isn't a sign of a flaw — it is the sign that learning has begun. And even after you adapt, your feel for stereo stays intact.

An untrained sense reads a new standard as a flaw

In a blind wine-tasting study, most untrained participants actually rated pricier wines lower. Among wine-trained participants the trend ran the other way. It isn't proof that pricier wine is better — it shows that a profile that takes learning reads as a flaw to an untrained sense.

The observation that a liking for a new taste tends to rise after roughly 10–15 exposures points the same way. Coffee and dark chocolate travel the same path.

With progressive lenses your vision sways for the first 10–14 days, yet most users adapt. Opticians advise: “Don't switch back and forth with your old glasses. It resets your adaptation.” Spatial audio is the same. Toggling it on and off keeps adaptation from ever starting.

Adapt like this

  1. Start with your most familiar album. Your ear already has a reference for judging the change.
  2. Use it continuously. Over a few days to a few weeks, the oddness fades.
  3. One level-matched comparison on day one is enough (see 01). After that, keep it on.
You lose nothing When the sound reaching your ears changes, people adapt anew and the earlier sense stays intact — this is well established. In an experiment that reshaped the outer ear, participants adapted to the new condition within weeks and kept their prior ability after it was reversed. You will not lose your feel for stereo.

For stereo tracks, turn on EX-STEREO, not 7.1. And in any case, if the timbre has changed, the same processing has been applied twice.

The setting depends on the source

A stereo track carries only left-right information. Apply 7.1 to it and no missing direction appears — the width just narrows. In that case turn on EX-STEREO: it lifts the sound out of your head without touching direction, and some devices label it “stereo expansion.” The “expanded surround image” from the intro is exactly this mode.

When a multichannel track reaches the device intact, 7.1 spatial audio restores its directional information. But whether it gets through depends on the service-and-device combination, so if you are unsure, it is safest to start with EX-STEREO.

If the timbre changed, suspect double processing first

If the sound turned muffled or thin, the same processing is overlapping in two or more places. It is not the price of turning spatial audio on but a settings issue, laid out in the table below.
